Using YouTube to supplement homeschool curriculum is a great way to encourage your young learner. I also use YouTube and have learned how to code on there. My husband learned how to change the oil to our car also. There are endless resources and opportunities when using YouTube to supplement homeschool curriculum.

Here are some great ideas that you can use, broken down by subject.

Math

Math is a subject that many homeschoolers struggle to teach. Often, you will find that you have to relearn lost skills in order to teach your children. There are entire YouTube channels dedicated to teaching different approaches to various math topics, allowing you to learn together or to find different techniques that might help your child to understand a subject that you can’t explain in a way that works for them.

Writing and Grammar

There are loads of great resources on YouTube for teaching writing and grammar, which is surprising for some. Homeschoolers can find lots of ideas for supplementing ELA curriculum, from writing prompts to explanations of various grammar rules. Find educational videos that will help children to remember rules and exceptions by presenting them in a fun way that they can connect with.

Social Studies and History

YouTube videos are a wonderful way to add depth to topics in history and social studies. Find additional information about topics that are interesting to your children or get answers to their questions that are not addressed in their textbooks. One important caveat to using YouTube to teach history and social topics is to pre-screen the sources. It is easy for content creators to hide propaganda or questionable principles within their videos, so be sure that the videos are produced by a reputable source.

Science

Teaching science can sometimes be a challenge for homeschooling families, especially when it comes to implementing some of the labs and experiments that traditional schools can include in their curriculum. In addition to finding information and answers that aren’t covered in texts, you can often find videos that show chemistry and physics experiments and labs that you might not have the resources to complete in a hands-on situation. Though hands-on might be more fun, using YouTube to supplement homeschool curriculum will allow you to still teach the information.

Foreign Language

By using YouTube to help teach foreign languages, students can get a better feel for pronunciation and inflection within a different language. Whether using video lessons that are specifically meant to teach a language or finding entertaining videos that are in another language for some real-life experience, YouTube can provide plenty of viewing matter that will be beneficial in their quest to be bilingual.

Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to using YouTube to supplement homeschool curriculum. You can search for information to help teach electives or other special interest classes and even find full video courses that your children can watch. Using YouTube to supplement homeschool curriculum will open many educational doors for your family!

Do you use YouTube to supplement your kids homeschool curriculum also? What’s your favorite channel? I would love to add some to my list.
