You sure can take a car seat on the plane. As long as it is FAA approved and that you have purchased a seat for your child.
If you don’t want to bring a car seat on board, you can check it in. Or you can simply take it to the boarding gate and check it at the gate prior to boarding. If you do this, I recommend using a car seat travel bag.
