Billund is a small town in Denmark, just short 3-hour train ride away from Copenhagen. Billund Denmark is home to the first and original Legoland Theme Park. Billund is also well known for Lego House and Lalandia water park resort. All these make Billund a great place to take your kids on family vacation. Most people visit Copenhagen and then take the train to Billund, however flying into Billund is also an option because they have the second largest airport in Denmark.

The kids are huge Lego fans, and so am I, so I knew a trip to Denmark would not be complete without visiting Billund with the kids. With that in mind, I made plans for us to spend 2 days there.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Billund, Denmark

If you’re heading to Billund to visit amusements parks as well as the waterpark, then summer time will be the best time to visit. However if you’re visiting just for Legoland and Lego House, as well as museums which are indoor, then anytime is a good time to visit. When visiting Denmark in the Winter with kids make sure to dress appropriately for the weather because it does get very cold. We visited Billund in October and it was cold. Coming from California, our perception of cold will vary though. The weather was in the high 50’s.

How To Get To Billund

Train From Copenhagen to Billund

The easiest way to get to Billund from Copenhagen is by train. The train is just under 3 hours, consists of a 2-hour train ride and a 40-minute bus ride and cost $110 for 2 adults – 2 kids ride free per paying adult. The best route from Copenhagen to Billund will be to take the ICL from Copenhagen Central Station to Vejle, walk about 4 minutes and then take the bus from Vejle Trafikcenter to Legoland Billund Resort which is about a 5-10-minute walk.

Pro Tip: Book your train seats ahead of time! We did not do this, so unfortunately the cabin we were in got separated and we continued to another city while our luggage went somewhere else. It was such a hassle getting our luggage bag and it took us over 7 hours to get from Copenhagen to Billund. Crazy but a great learning experience also.

Fly Into Billund Airport, Denmark

Billund Airport is the second largest airport in Denmark. When we left Billund, we flew out of the Billund Airport to London. If Billund is your main destination, then flying into Billund is the way to go.

  • Taking A Taxi In Denmark: You can take a taxi to Billund, however it will be very expensive so I do not recommend it at all. Taxis in Denmark is very expensive.

How To Get Around Billund

Bus: We took the bus to every place we needed to go to with no issues. You can pay for your buss fare with cash or with a credit card.

Where To Stay In Billund With Kids

Billund is expensive, however not as expensive Copenhagen, whew! We spent 2 nights in Billund and stayed in two different places.

Legoland Pirates’ Inn Motel

I wanted the kids to experience staying on one of the Legoland Properties. I knew they would enjoy it especially because they love Legos, however I knew this would come with a high price tag. I searched for Legoland rooms on TripAdvisor which led me to book on Booking as it was the website offering the best deal. I booked one night in a room that sleeps 6, it also included fee breakfast for $242. This was perfect because it is expensive to eat out in Denmark and our room had no kitchen for us to cook any meals.

Legoland Denmark is huge and has several other places to stay. They are all walking distance from each other.

  • Hotel Legoland: This is the actual Legoland Hotel, however it more expensive as it is less than a 2 minute walk from the Legoland Theme Park. I snapped this photo below as we were walking around Legoland. Although expensive, it is very convenient.

Danhostel Grindsted-Billund

We spent our second night in Danhostel Grindsted-Billund. It was not as close to Legoland, but it didn’t matter because it was much cheaper and just a 20-minute bus ride away. Again, I booked this hotel on TripAdvisor and it cost $135. It had a communal kitchen where we cooked meals, a play area for kids and a spacious room. There were several other families here.

Things To Do In Billund With Kids

Legoland Theme Park

Legoland is one of our favorite theme parks. Although the rides are the same at all the parks we’ve been to, it is always exciting for the kids and I. We spent an entire day here and even when they closed the kids still did not want to leave. Ticket cost $55 for kids 3-12 an $58 for kids 13 and up. You can save some money if you purchase your tickets in advance online at least 7 days before your trip. There are so many rides at Lego Land, and this amusement park is perfect for kids of all ages, adults as well. Billund Denmark With Kids The Original Legoland Theme Park and Lego House Billund Denmark With Kids The Original Legoland Theme Park and Lego House Billund Denmark With Kids The Original Legoland Theme Park and Lego House Billund Denmark With Kids The Original Legoland Theme Park and Lego House

Other Legoland Theme Parks we have been to:

Lego House Billund

The Lego House in Billund is fairly new, as they were celebrating their one-year anniversary the day we visited and had cake for everyone there. The bottom floor is free and has 2 restaurants and Lego Shop. The top floors are were the Experience Zones are and you have to pay to go up there, and it is absolutely worth it. I had so much fun I did not want to leave the Lego House. My favorite part was the Lego pit!! The kids loved everything, especially being able to build with all types and sorts of Legos. I plan to go back to Billund just so I can visit the Lego House again.

Booking Your Trip To Denmark – Tips & Tricks

How To Book Cheap Flights When You Travel

If you are looking to book the cheapest flights you can possibly find on the internet, then make sure to use Skyscanner when searching for flights. Don’t forget to download the Free Skyscanner App also which is very handy. This is how I was able to get $12.40 airfare from Los Angeles to London, as well as $9.40 airfare from London to Italy.

How To Book Affordable Accommodation When You Travel

When booking accommodation, TripAdvisor is the way to go because you can read reviews and see photos from other travelers to get a feel of where you will be staying. Other great sites to book hotels are HotelsCombined, Booking.com and Hotels.com. Don’t forget to check HomeAway and VRBO for house and villa rentals too. Perfect for when you travel with a large family, and also to save money when hotels are expensive. Another favorite of mine is BookVIP – they offer huge resort savings.

How To Book Activities When You Travel

My favorite website to search for activities, tours and especially skip the line tickets is Viator and Get Your Guide. This makes trip planning so much easier because you don’t have to search several sites as both websites have several options to choose from. Same also goes with TripAdvisor Attractions – you can search and book activities as well as read reviews.

How To Book Rental Cars When You Travel

Instead of checking every single website, I use RentalCars.com, Car Rental 8 and Skyscanner Car Rentals to find car rentals all over the world with just one click. If you plan to park at the airport, visit Airport Parking and make a reservation.

Why Travel Insurance Is a Must When You Travel

People book trips and forget the most important part, purchasing travel insurance. Because we travel often, I purchase our travel insurance through Allianz for a year at a time which means that we are covered for all trips within that year. Travel insurance will protect you and your family against theft, injury illness, flight cancellations and so much more. It is a MUST!
