Travel books are a great resource for all children. Studies have proven that when children read/are read to, they are exposed to a wide range of words. I started reading to Aiden when he was still in utero. After he was born, I made sure to buy books and continue to read to him. He also has a library card and we visit often and check out books.
reading about Japan prior to our trip
Reading is very important, because it helps children build their vocabulary and prepare them to be able to read on their own. We read all types of books, Dr Seuss, Bob Books, Spanish books, French books, Travel books etc. My goal is for Aiden to develop a love for reading a variety of books. Travel books are his absolute favorite.
We travel quite a bit, but that doesn’t stop us from reading. Instead, think it gives us more to read about. Before and after we visit a country, we read books about where we are going/ where we went. When we read a book before we travel, we talk about what we will see and what to expect. When we read a book after we return, we identify all the things that we saw and all the things that we did not see. It’s an amazing experience all together and builds on his vocabulary as we go.
